Woodcarving Shoppe

Unlock the secrets of woodcarving at Dennis Ruane’s Walnut Creek Studio and Gallery in Marshall. Ruane is an expert woodcarver and his passion for the art began at the age of 12 when achieving his first Boy Scout merit badge. His work has evolved from a traditional American folk and realistic style to his current contemporary form.

Woodcarving is one of the most ancient forms of art that exists and it is impressive to see how it has changed overtime as well as stayed the same. The techniques implemented by Dennis showcase how much care is needed when sculpting a work of art. Unlike some other art, wood sculpting requires the artists to work in three dimensions. Light, texture and orientation are just some of the challenges a wood sculpture always needs to consider when crafting a piece.

Dennis creates a selection of different kinds of pieces involving wood. At the Walnut Creek Studio Dennis can be found working on a wooden sculpture, creating some mixed media pieces or crafting some “treenware”. Treenware is practical wood sculpting that includes kitchen utensils to bowls and salad servers.

Dennis is also the author of a number of books and is an avid gardener. Dennis and his wife welcome visitors to his studio and gallery by appointment.
