Oil & Watercolor Painters in Madison County, NC

What better location for an artist’s studio than in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina?  Local oil and watercolor artists alike have been drawn to the rural mountains as well as to the town of Marshall to set up their work spaces to paint landscapes or abstracts inspired by the beauty of the surroundings. One such space is a converted high school on Blannahassett Island which now houses Marshall High Studios.

You can find Mary Maupin Brumo at her Marshall, NC, studio doing what she loves—painting in vibrant colors. Mary starts with a vision –perhaps of something that she has seen throughout this beautiful county and then lets the shapes, lines, colors flow onto the canvas. She describes this act as the “essence of creativity” and says she paints because “it’s who I am.” Come to her studio in downtown Marshall for a visit but call first for an appointment.

After a teaching career both at the high school and college levels, Bill Weldner moved to Madison County and settled in the beautiful Spring Creek area to paint for pleasure. His Spirit Series paintings illustrate Bill’s philosophical thoughts on the balance between polar opposites. This is brought out both in the subject matter and the technique. The location of his studio, a short drive from the Appalachian Trail, fuels his inspiration. Bill also welcomes local painters to twice a month discussion groups on a casual basis and welcomes visitors to the studio by appointment. He has explored another method of expression in digital images and so you can also find him listed in the Mixed Media Artists section of the site.

Matt Zedler grew up surrounded by a family of visual, literary, and musical artists.  And so, it was natural that his creativity would be fueled by this environment and lead him to pursuing one of those fields. Currently his work in the visual art field is self-described as Abstract Expressionism.  Matt works mainly in acrylics and oils but also has used mixed media to “push the envelope of self expression.” NewZart Studio in downtown Marshall is Matt’s gallery where you can see his work by appointment.
