Barn Quilt Driving Tour in Madison County, North Carolina
In many different areas of North Carolina and other states, a project is evident dotted along the country roads and within the towns–barn quilts. The quilt has been and continues to be an enduring symbol of comfort, family, heritage and community. This project was created as a way to honor of the great traditions of our rural county while showcasing its natural beauty. Quilt patterns are selected, painted on wood, and attached to barns, homes, and businesses.
The project got its start in Madison County as part of a grant awarded to the Madison County Arts Council in 2007 and has been growing ever since. Drive through the rural roads using a map of the county and the addresses of the quilts and you will be treated to some scenic views of our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and rivers as well as the views of the quilts. Some of the patterns have been handed down through generations; others are simply beloved.
